Construction of huts and handing over them to Irula families

The construction of huts for 40 Irula tribal families is completed. They were living in govt. lands (lake, temple lands, and others) in two Villages in Madurantakam Taluk, Chengalpattu District.

The Government allotted land for them in Alapakkam village, L Endathur block, Madurantakam Taluk, Chengalpatu District under survey No. 252 for the construction of houses. Each family was allotted free of cost 1 Ares of land each and house pattas (ownership documents) were allotted to each family. This place is approx. 100 km away from the Students' Home.

We have completed the construction of huts for the 40 families. A hut has a 12-foot X 12-foot area with bamboo structure and coconut leaves for the roof as well as on four sides (top portion) + a 2-foot height brick wall on all four sides (wall - bottom portion) and cement flooring and a door.

A Community Hall (40 feet length, 20 feet width) with metal roofing sheets, cement flooring, 4 feet walls on three sides with back side wall for full height, MS weld mesh above the side walls and in the front side with a door is also constructed for the use of the families. The tuition center for the children from these families is already started in the hall. A hand pump also was provided for their use.

On 17th December 2023, the huts were handed over to the Irula families. We have given dry ration, cooking utensils, mats, bedsheets, and solar lanterns to each family.

Chennai and the nearby districts of Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu were devastated by the impact of Cyclone Michaung, which finally made landfall in Andhra Pradesh on December 5. The cyclone has left significant parts of Chennai and surrounding areas in a state of severe distress, with torrential rain causing widespread flooding and prolonged power cuts persisting for more than two days after the rain had ceased. The unorganized sector and daily wage earners faced serious challenges because of the damages and disruptions in their households and surrounding areas.


In response to the urgent needs expressed by the affected families, we provided cooked food to 800 people as primary relief.

 

In the second phase, we have distributed dry ration kits to impacted families. These kits, containing essential grocery items, cost around Rs.1000 each. After a thorough assessment, we distributed these kits to 591 families in the affected locations. 


The beneficiaries are from Ennore in North Chennai (70), Thathaimanji near Minjur (42), Devaneri and Sethilpakkam near Redhills (69), Vyasarbadi, North Chennai Area (160), South Chennai - Surrounding Nanganallur Girls Higher Secondary School area (250).

The recent torrential rains and the cyclone Michaung have played havoc in Chennai city and its suburbs. One of many things that got damaged due to water logging is two-wheelers (Scooters and motorcycles).

 

In order to help the owners of these vehicles, Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home, Mylapore, Chennai, arranged oil servicing of the Two Wheelers (other than electric & BS-VI vehicles) free of cost at Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home.

 

 This camp as part of relief activities was conducted for six days from 13 December 2023 to 18 December 2023. A total of 220 Vehicles were serviced in the camp. Spare parts were purchased based on the model and type of vehicles. The entire operation was carried out by the hired mechanics, our staff, students, and volunteers of our Polytechnic College.

 

Clearing the fallen trees: Our staff and students cleared the nearby roads by cutting the trees fallen on the roads.

Ms. Anna-Maja Henriksson, Finland’s Minister of Education, visited our Students’ Home on Friday, 20th October 2023. Finland’s Ambassador to India Mr. Kimmo Lahdevirta, Mr. Chidambaram, Hon. Consul of Finland, Chennai, and members of a Finnish-Indian higher education network and consulate staff accompanied her during the visit.

The purpose of her visit to India was to deepen the existing cooperation in education projects and to support their operations and export efforts. In addition, to take initiatives to develop vocational education cooperation within the framework of attracting and employing skilled workers and experts from India in the needed sectors. This is in the light of both countries, over the decades, have seen a significant deepening of the relationship in different sectors, including trade, technology, education and culture.

In our Home, they visited our Polytechnic College and Vivekananda-BPCL Skill Development Centre. They went to Laboratories and workshops like Automobile Chassis & transmission lab, Engine lab, Electric vehicle lab, Refrigeration & Air conditioning lab, Mechatronics lab, Modular production system & Robotics lab, Computer Aided Design lab, Computer hardware lab, Network security centre and Software development centre.

They were briefed about the Vocational training being offered to students in our Skill Development Centre. She and her team interacted with our Polytechnic faculties & students to learn more and to have first-hand information about the Vocational and Hands-on training offered.

They also saw the Mobile Robotics Lab which trains the students of Government schools in and around Chennai on the basics of Robotics and the Internet of Things (IoT) as a part of our Home's educational activities.

Her team saw the display of Navaratri Kolu. They were briefed about the significance of Navaratri and also about our Home's Holistic approach to helping the downtrodden people of our society. She and her team were impressed and appreciative of the welfare activities carried out by our Home.

Finally, they were given mementoes as a mark of remembrance of their visit to our Students’ Home.
